CCFOI treasurer, former president, to be inducted in the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame

Jacqueline Smith, the treasurer for CCFOI, and James H. Smith, a past president for the board, are among three inductees into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame this year.

The award will be given by the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at an awards dinner in Berlin, Conn.

Jacqueline Smith has been CCFOI treasurer since 2022, and is the ombudsman for Stars and Stripes news organization, which covers the U.S. military community around the world.

She’s been a reporter at The Hartford Courant, The Day of New London, and the New Haven Register, assistant managing editor of the Record- Journal (Meriden) and managing editor of The News-Times (Danbury) where she became an editorial page editor and weekly columnist for Hearst Connecticut Media Group. She also was an assistant professor of journalism at Southern Connecticut State University.

She lives in Bethel with her husband, James H. Smith, who is also being inducted into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame.

A retired journalist and former president of CCFOI, James Smith is a member of the New England Newspaper Hall of Fame.

He has served as city editor and sports editor of the Hartford Courant, managing editor of the Torrington Register-Citizen, The Day of New London, the News-Times of Danbury; editor of the Connecticut Post in Bridgeport and executive editor of the New Britain Herald and Bristol Press. Smith has also written eight books.

Additionally, Connecticut SPJ will posthumously induct Owen Canfield into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame. Canfield is a seven-time Connecticut Sportswriter of the Year, who worked as a sports columnist for the Hartford Courant and Torrington Register-Citizen. He died in 2019 at 85 years old.
