The meeting was via Zoom.

Present: Mike Savino, Tom Scheffey, Mitch Pearlman, Jacqueline Smith, Michele Jacklin, Mary Connolly, David DesRoches, Karen Florin, Paula Pearlman, Colleen Murphy, Liz Gemski.

The minutes of the Nov. 15, 2023 monthly meeting were accepted.

Treasurer’s report: Smith reported a balance of $10,863.46. Letters on dues will be mailed in January.

Legislative report: There was discussion that university professors will again ask legislators to create an FOI exemption for their research and other documents. CCFOI is opposed and the FOIC staff says there are already exemptions in the law to address the professors’ concerns. The professors advocating this exemption say they don’t want to go through the process of being subject to the FOI Act.

Recruitment: The discussion continued about adding new board members. We will continue to reach out to media organizations and FOI advocates for suggestions.

CFOG reminder: The annual “Stories Behind the Big Stories” will be Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. at Elmwood Community Center, 1106 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. A $10 donation is requested and the event includes refreshments. Journalists will discuss the major stories they broke this year.

Looking ahead: The next monthly meeting will be Jan. 17 at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
