Minutes, April 19, 2023
The meeting was via Zoom.
Present: Tom Scheffey, Jacqueline Smith, Michele Jacklin, Mary Connolly, Jeff Daniels, Mitch Pearlman, Steve Nevas, Gary Gold, Karen Florin, David Des Roches, Liz Gemski, Paul Pearlman.
The minutes of the April 5, 2023 special meeting were accepted.
Legislative update: Two additional FOIC staff positions have been added to the budget to handle the backlog of complaints before FOIC. The budget is usually the last bill voted on in June before the legislature adjourns. Gemski said there were no other updates on FOI-related bills.
Treasurer’s report: Smith reported a balance of $16,536.78.
Annual meeting: There was discussion of the annual meeting, traditionally scheduled for June and combined with an awards luncheon. There was agreement the traditional approach is no longer viable. Attendance had been dropping even before the pandemic and after the pandemic work schedules have changed. At the April 5 special meeting, it was agreed a better use of the June 21 monthly meeting would be as a “retreat” to discuss recruitment and future direction. It was decided the June 21 meeting will be at the home of Mitch Pearlman, 35 Bunker Hill Road, Glastonbury at 1 p.m. It will start at 1 p.m. with lunch and last another two hours for discussions. Pearlman will arrange the food and each member will reimburse him. It was agreed to delay an official annual meeting and awards until fall.
Election of officers: Elections usually take place in June. We delayed discussion until next month.
Looking ahead: The next special meeting for a legislative update will be May 3 at 9 a.m. via Zoom. The regular monthly meeting will be May 17 at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
