Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information
Special Meeting, Feb. 1, 2023
The meeting was via Zoom.
Present: Tom Scheffey, Jacqueline Smith, Mary Connolly, Mitch Pearlman, Steve Nevas, Jeff Daniels, Gary Gold, Michele Jacklin.
Time of meetings: The special meeting was scheduled to focus on the need to recruit new board members and how to do that. To attract working journalists, or FOI supporters who work in other fields, the time of meetings was discussed. The old schedule of monthly lunch meetings in Hartford ended with the pandemic and doesn’t fit the schedules of many who might be interested in joining. There was agreement our current practice of meeting by Zoom works well. We have recently been meeting at 9 a.m. by Zoom. While there was discussion of early evening Zoom meetings, it was decided to stick with 9 a.m. on the traditional third Wednesday of each month and see if it helps in recruitment.
Promoting and explaining our work: It was agreed we need to do better on this. We will start with a letter to members and supporters that addresses our work and asks for suggestions on potential board members.
Better use of our website: We hired Katherine Garner to update the website. There was discussion of the need to regularly update it. It was suggested the 2023 legislative agenda should be on the website.
Potential new members: Two experienced journalists have expressed interest in joining the board. They are Karen Florin, audience engagement editor of The Day, and David DesRoches, director of community programming at Quinnipiac University. The board voted unanimously to invite them to join the board.
Looking forward: The next CCFOI meeting will be Feb. 15 at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
