CCFOI Meeting Minutes – Nov. 17, 2021

The meeting was via Zoom.

Present: Mike Savino, Michele Jacklin, Kim Phillips, Mary Connolly, Jeff Daniels, Tom Scheffey, Mitch Pearlman, Gary Gold, Chris Powell, Jacky Smith, Liz Gemski, Paula Pearlman.

The minutes of the Oct. 20, 2021 were accepted.

Treasurer’s report: Phillips reported a balance of $13,735.45. There was discussion at the October meeting that the current balance seemed higher than past years. She looked at a couple of past balances. In November 2019, the balance was $13,632. In November 2018, it was $8,128. She said the increase was thanks to Hearst paying its dues in May 2019, totaling $4,000.

Legislative report: Gemski said among the issues getting attention in the 2022 legislative session will be criminal penalties for youths, due to the rise in youth crime, and mental health. There was discussion of sponsoring an information program on the use of algorithms in public decisions and transparency on the use of algorithms. A report on the subject has been requested from the Office of Legislative Research. A draft of a Yale report on the subject is due in December. It would be best to have the information program in January, since the legislative session opens in February. The information program would probably be done virtually. We will check if CFOG is interested in being a co-sponsor.

Looking ahead: The next CCFOI meeting will be Dec. 15 at noon, via Zoom.
